How Learning OS Works in School

The school-wide development of the Mind OS

Not a Separate Programme, but Part of How the School Works

Learning OS is not an after-school club, an occasional development session, or a collection of unrelated teaching ideas.

It is not a programme that is taken off the shelf from time to time and put away again when the lesson ends.

Learning OS is a system for building the foundations of learning, integrated into the everyday life of the school.

Children do not learn only how to solve a particular task. They also develop the internal system from which task performance emerges.

They sustain attention. They gain experience. They recognise emotions. They form multimodal mental representations. They use language and symbolic expression. They encode new memories and recall earlier ones. They guide a line of thought. They choose goals. They plan, organise, and act. They look back at their own functioning and make corrections when necessary.

Learning OS does not develop these processes in isolation.

It builds them as an integrated system.

Learning OS makes this internal functioning visible and consciously developable.

The central principle is that learning is not only about completing tasks. It is also about the child gradually becoming able to guide their own functioning.

Learning OS does not place another task on the child. It develops the internal system through which the task becomes possible.

The Two-Part Model of Integration

Learning OS becomes part of school life in two complementary ways.

A Dedicated Weekly Learning OS Lesson

From Grade 1 to Grade 4, the conscious development of the Mind OS is given a dedicated place in the timetable.

During this lesson, children do not simply complete subject-specific tasks. They practise the capabilities of their own internal functioning.

The Learning OS lesson provides a separate, safe learning environment.

Here, children can slow down.

They can observe.

They can experiment.

They can make errors.

They can look back at how their attention, emotions, thinking, volition, language, memory, and action operated during a process.

The child encounters not only the completed result, but also the path through which that result was produced.

This is the Learning OS practice ground.

Integration into Everyday Lessons

Learning OS becomes a genuine school-wide system when the capabilities developed during the dedicated lesson can also be used in subject learning and unfamiliar situations.

The language and practices developed during the Learning OS lesson are carried into mathematics, reading, writing, environmental studies, and other subjects.

The child uses the same internal tools in specific subject-based situations.

These must not become two separate worlds.

The child should not practise self-direction during the Learning OS lesson and then leave it behind completely when mathematics begins.

The system works when the capabilities developed in the dedicated lesson come to life within subject tasks.

The dedicated lesson builds the tools of functioning. Subject lessons put them to work in real learning situations.

Together, these two levels give Learning OS its strength.

What Do Children Do During a Learning OS Lesson?

During a Learning OS lesson, children actively use the different perspectives of the Mind OS.

They do not merely talk about them.

They put them to work.

They Observe

Children observe objects, situations, movements, sounds, changes, and relationships.

  • what has changed;
  • what has remained the same;
  • what is important;
  • what is distracting;
  • what belongs together;
  • what is different;
  • where a process begins and where it ends.

Observation is more than looking.

It is conscious selection and organisation.

Children learn that precise thinking begins with precise experience.

They Recognise and Name Emotions

Children learn to recognise and name what is happening inside them.

Are they curious?

Are they uncertain?

Are they afraid of making a mistake?

Has the demand become too great?

Have they lost patience?

Are they experiencing the pleasure of suddenly understanding something?

Naming emotions is not a separate psychological exercise.

It is part of how learning functions.

Children become increasingly able to regulate their own state when they can first notice and understand it.

They Form Multimodal Mental Representations

Children do not learn only words and rules.

They build internal patterns.

A situation may become connected with images, sounds, movement, space, rhythm, bodily sensations, emotional tone, and possibilities for action.

They observe.

They act things out.

They arrange objects.

They move.

They draw.

They imagine.

Children can work reliably with learning content when it is not present only as a word or symbol, but has also taken shape as an internal representation.

A multimodal mental representation is the natural medium through which learning content becomes a living internal pattern.

They Shape and Guide Thought Through Language and Expression

Children speak.

But within Learning OS, language means more than oral communication.

Children make their internal content tangible through speech, writing, drawing, signs, diagrams, movement, gestures, rhythm, and other cultural forms of expression.

They name what they perceive.

They give form to what they think.

They describe the steps.

They draw relationships.

They record a sequence with signs.

They show a structure in a diagram.

They express a pattern through movement or rhythm.

Language and expression are therefore more than communication.

They are tools of thinking and self-direction.

  • name what they experience;
  • organise what they think;
  • hold on to the steps;
  • communicate a plan;
  • ask for help;
  • look back at their own functioning;
  • correct something they previously expressed imprecisely.
The internal pattern forms within multimodal representation. Through language and expression, it becomes tangible and possible to guide.

They Remember

Children encode new memories and recall earlier ones.

They do not try merely to memorise fragments of information.

They retain experiences, representations, words, rules, feelings, movements, and patterns of functioning.

  • what they remember;
  • what helps them encode and retain something;
  • how they can retrieve it later;
  • which earlier experience is relevant to the present task;
  • how an earlier pattern can be used in a new situation.

A lasting memory is formed when an experience or pattern of functioning becomes meaningful, is strengthened through practice, and becomes connected with other content.

Remembering is therefore more than repeating something from memory.

It makes previously developed knowledge and patterns of functioning available again.

Children recall earlier experience when they recognise in a new situation:

“I have encountered something like this before.” “I have used this step before.” “I know what helped me then.”

They Guide a Line of Thought

Children look for relationships.

They compare.

They classify.

They examine causes and consequences.

They build a whole from its parts, then break the whole down into parts.

They do not focus only on finding the correct answer.

They also practise how to reach it.

They put the path of thought into words.

They show relationships.

They notice when a step is missing.

They look for a new direction when the first approach does not lead to a result.

They Choose Goals

Children learn to distinguish between:

  • what they would like;
  • what they actually choose;
  • what they set before themselves as a goal.

A goal is not simply an instruction given by the teacher.

The child must turn it into an internal direction.

What do I want to achieve?

What result do I want to create?

How will I know that I have finished?

A clear goal gives visible direction to action.

They Plan

Children think through the path of action in advance.

What should the first step be?

What should follow?

What would be the best sequence?

What might be needed along the way?

Where might difficulties arise?

Planning does not mean seeing every detail perfectly in advance.

It means that the child does not begin blindly.

They have an idea of the path ahead.

They Organise

Children arrange the conditions needed for action.

They prepare the necessary tools.

They allocate time.

They establish the sequence.

They divide roles and subtasks.

They coordinate cooperation.

Organisation is often an invisible part of learning.

A child may know the answer and still fail to reach it if the tools, time, steps, or division of work are not properly arranged.

They Act

Children carry out what they have planned.

They write.

They read.

They calculate.

They draw.

They move.

They build.

They experiment.

They speak.

They cooperate.

Action produces more than a visible result.

It also creates new experience.

The child sees what worked, where the process departed from the plan, and what needs to be done differently.

They Look Back

Children do not simply finish a task.

They look back at their functioning.

What did I want to achieve?

What did I do?

Where did I lose the thread?

Which step worked well?

Where did I need to ask for help?

What would I do differently next time?

Looking back transforms action into experience.

Experience can then become reusable knowledge about functioning.

They Correct

Children learn that an error does not bring the work to an end.

It shows where to continue.

They read again.

They rearrange.

They clarify.

They add what is missing.

They redesign.

They correct.

Correction is not a punishment.

It is a natural part of functioning.

During a Learning OS lesson, the child does not merely produce a result. They learn to use, observe, and improve the internal system from which the result emerges.

How Does This Transfer into Subject Lessons?

Learning OS becomes a genuine school-wide system when the functioning developed during the dedicated lesson appears in everyday learning situations.

Consider a simple example.

A child is sitting in front of a mathematical word problem.

They have read the text but have not begun to work.

A traditional response might be:

“Read it again.” “Pay more attention.” “We have already practised this.” “Why haven’t you started?”

A teacher using Learning OS first tries to locate the point at which the child became stuck.

Does the child have an internal representation of the situation?

Do they understand what is happening in the problem?

Do they know what they are looking for?

Have they lost track of one of the pieces of information?

Has too much arrived at once?

Can they see a first step?

The child might say:

“I have read it, but I don’t have a picture of it yet.”

The next step does not necessarily need to be another verbal explanation.

The child might draw the situation.

They might represent it using physical objects.

They might show it through movement.

They might identify the people or objects involved and the change that has taken place.

They can then put the situation into words:

“This was the amount at the beginning. This amount was added. I need to find out how much there is altogether.”

Multimodal representation and language work together to make the task accessible.

The child can then set the goal, plan the first step, carry out the calculation, and look back at the result.

The teacher has not simply helped the child obtain the answer.

They have helped restore a workable path through the task.

A Reading Situation

Another child loses the thread of a story while reading.

They have decoded the words, but cannot explain what happened.

The teacher does not stop at:

“Read more carefully.”

They might ask:

  • Where did you lose the story?
  • Who was this part about?
  • What changed?
  • What can you see in your mind?
  • At which sentence did it become unclear?
  • Tell the story using a drawing or three signs.
  • What does this remind you of from an earlier, similar story?

The child recalls an earlier memory, forms a multimodal mental representation, uses language to organise the story, and then rereads the critical section.

The goal is not only to help them get through this one text.

It is also to help them recognise later:

“I have lost the thread. I need to return to the point where I still had a clear picture of the story.”

This is already self-direction.

The Teacher as a Cognitive Architect

Within Learning OS, the role of the teacher does not become smaller.

It becomes more precise.

The teacher does not only communicate subject content, assign tasks, and assess performance.

They also observe how the child’s internal system is developing and functioning.

In this sense, the teacher becomes a Cognitive Architect.

Not because the teacher designs the child’s mind from the outside.

But because they create situations, exercises, language, and feedback through which the child’s own Mind OS can develop.

The teacher:

  • observes the functioning behind visible performance;
  • asks more precise questions;
  • helps the child name the sticking point;
  • provides a targeted scaffold or functional prompt;
  • models how to look back at a process;
  • supports correction;
  • gradually transfers guidance to the child.

The teacher does not manufacture diagnoses.

They do not become a therapist.

They remain a teacher.

But they see more than the fact that a child has made an error.

They also ask:

Which internal process was unable to support the task sufficiently?

This question does not always produce an immediate answer.

But it establishes a pedagogical direction that moves closer to genuine support than the general instruction:

“Pay more attention.”

A Shared Language of Functioning

One of the most important effects of Learning OS within a school is the development of a shared language.

Children and teachers do not speak only about subject content.

They also speak about functioning.

The classroom language of the Self-Regulation Axis is:

I look → I understand → I assess → I adjust → I correct → I improve

The child learns to say:

  • “I lost track of the step.”
  • “I don’t have a picture of it yet.”
  • “I don’t understand what we are looking for.”
  • “It became too much all at once.”
  • “I know the goal, but I don’t have a plan.”
  • “I need to organise my tools first.”
  • “I am going back to the point where I still understood.”
  • “We have done something similar before.”
  • “I will try a different approach.”
  • “I am adjusting it.”
  • “I am correcting it.”

These sentences are not empty formulas.

They are internal handles.

They help the child turn a vague experience of being stuck into a tangible situation that can be understood and changed.

A shared language is also important among teachers.

If one teacher uses it consistently while another speaks about the child’s functioning in an entirely different way, it becomes more difficult to build a stable system.

Learning OS is therefore not the private method of a single teacher.

It requires a shared language across the school.

How Is Learning OS Introduced in a School?

Introducing Learning OS requires more than a single day of professional development.

It becomes a genuine institutional system when it is built into the way the school operates.

This requires structures that support continuity, predictability, and shared use.

A Dedicated Timetable Slot

The weekly Learning OS lesson needs a regular, predictable place in the timetable as a stable part of school life.

Children then experience the development of their own functioning as a genuine part of education, just as reading and mathematics are.

Regularity allows the functioning developed in these lessons gradually to become part of everyday learning situations.

Prepared and Supported Teachers

Teachers learn to understand and use the Mind OS map, the relationship between BOS and TES, and the operation of the three axes.

It is not enough to hand them worksheets or games.

A shared conceptual foundation enables teachers to use activities consciously. They can recognise which internal process a particular activity develops and how it connects with everyday subject learning.

The teacher does not merely apply methods.

They also understand the developmental process behind them.

A Shared Professional Language

The school’s teachers use shared concepts and questions.

This does not mean that everyone must repeat exactly the same sentences word for word.

But the underlying framework for interpreting learner functioning is shared.

Integration Across Subjects

The language and practices of Learning OS need to appear in everyday lessons.

The dedicated lesson alone is not enough.

Capabilities become stronger and more general when they are used in real task situations.

Professional Collaboration

Teachers regularly share their experience.

Where do children become stuck?

Which targeted scaffold helped?

Which exercise transferred successfully into mathematics, reading, or another subject?

Where does the shared language need to be refined?

Learning OS therefore does not remain a rigid script.

It becomes a professional culture that develops within the shared thinking and lived reality of the school.

Observation and Feedback

The school observes changes in:

  • children’s ability to begin tasks independently;
  • their ability to remain engaged with a task;
  • their response to errors;
  • their ability to correct and adjust;
  • the coordination of language and thinking;
  • retrieval from memory;
  • planning and organisation;
  • cooperation;
  • the language of self-direction.

Feedback is not merely measurement.

It is a tool for developing the educational system itself.

What Does the Child Experience?

For the child, Learning OS is not primarily a theoretical concept.

They experience that becoming stuck is not a nameless wall.

They have language for it.

They have a map for it.

They have tools for finding their way back.

Not every task becomes easy.

Not every form of tension disappears.

The child does not become immediately independent in every situation.

But they become less completely helpless when something inside them fails to begin.

They can learn to recognise:

  • where they are in the process;
  • what they understand;
  • what is missing;
  • what they feel;
  • what they remember;
  • what kind of internal representation they need to form;
  • what they need to say or draw;
  • what the goal should be;
  • what the first step should be;
  • what they need to change;
  • how they can correct.

External guidance from the teacher gradually becomes internal guidance.

This is the beginning of Mind OS Management.

The child does not merely carry out the task. They gradually become able to guide the internal system from which task performance emerges.

Learning OS in Everyday School Life

Learning OS is not working well simply because its name is mentioned during every lesson.

It is working when the child increasingly:

  • notices what is happening inside them;
  • can name where they have become stuck;
  • can recall an earlier experience;
  • can form a multimodal mental representation;
  • can use language to grasp and guide their own thinking;
  • can choose a goal;
  • can plan and organise an action;
  • can return to the process after becoming distracted or stuck;
  • can correct an error;
  • can use an earlier pattern of functioning in a new situation.

Learning OS becomes genuinely integrated when it no longer floats above teaching as a separate programme.

It becomes a shared culture of functioning for the child, the teacher, and the school.

Learning OS is built in the dedicated lesson, put to work across subjects, and gradually becomes the child’s own internal system.
