How Learning OS Works in School

A dedicated foundational subject and a system woven throughout the life of the school

Learning OS creates regular, rich school experiences in which children use, practice, and develop the whole Mind OS in many different ways.

The Mind OS is continuously active. Through it, children attend, experience, feel, form inner representations, think, remember, choose, design, plan, organize, and act. Through Symbolic Expression, children give form to inner content, collaborate with others, and increasingly direct their own processes.

Learning OS does not train these processes in isolation. Children use the whole Mind OS again and again across different content areas, changing situations, and increasingly complex tasks.

Through regular use and practice, mental processes can become richer, more precise, better organized, and more reliable. Children gradually recognize what supports attention, understanding, creativity, and action, which strategies can be used again, and what still needs further practice.

Learning OS is also taught as a dedicated foundational subject. It has a protected place in the weekly schedule, with its own developmental goals, curriculum, practices, and instructional resources.

At the same time, its approach and practices become integrated into mathematics, reading, writing, science and social studies, the arts, movement, project work, and the everyday life of the school.

Learning OS does not place yet another demand on children. It gives them repeated opportunities to use, practice, and develop the whole internal system through which they engage with the world, learn, create, collaborate, and act.

Two Forms of Integration

Learning OS becomes part of school life in two mutually reinforcing ways.

A Dedicated Weekly Learning OS Class

From first through fourth grade, the conscious use, practice, and development of the Mind OS has a dedicated place in the weekly schedule.

The Learning OS class is a regular and secure practice environment. Through tasks, games, movement, conversation, observation, creative work, and collaboration, children use the whole Mind OS.

A particular perspective may receive special attention while the rest of the system remains active. Children practice:

  • directing and sustaining attention;
  • accurate sensation and perception;
  • emotional engagement;
  • forming multimodal representations;
  • imagining, developing, and evaluating possibilities;
  • giving form to inner content through Symbolic Expression;
  • remembering and reapplying previous learning;
  • forming goals;
  • designing outcomes and planning processes;
  • organizing and carrying out action;
  • collaborating with others;
  • reflecting on their own processes;
  • and, when needed, reorganizing and adjusting.

Practice does not mean mechanical repetition. Children use the same general-purpose capabilities in many different situations. As a result, those capabilities can transfer more flexibly to other tasks and areas of life.

The Learning OS class is a place for varied use, regular practice, and increasingly independent direction of the Mind OS.

Integration Across Subjects and Everyday School Life

Children also use the processes practiced in the dedicated class in subject learning, creative work, social situations, and everyday life.

In a math problem, students form an inner representation and search for relationships. While reading, students connect characters, events, and meanings. During writing, students establish a purpose and shape a structure. In a project, students design, plan, organize, and collaborate. Through the arts, children give outward form to inner experience. In social situations, children interpret emotions, perspectives, and possibilities for action.

The process map and shared language support this use, but they do not replace it.

Children first experience, practice, and act. Then children look back and ask:

  • What helped?
  • Which strategy worked?
  • What can I use again?
  • What still needs practice?
  • What needs to change?

The connection works in both directions. The dedicated class provides focused practice, while subject-area learning and everyday school situations provide authentic opportunities for use.

Children practice purposefully in the Learning OS class. They use the same processes in real subject-area tasks. In everyday school life, children apply them with growing independence.

What Do Children Do in a Learning OS Class?

A Learning OS class is not a theoretical lecture about the Mind OS. Children work with the whole Mind OS.

Children Attend and Gain Experience

Children observe objects, sounds, movement, change, and relationships.

They practice directing, sustaining, and shifting attention, selecting significant elements, comparing, and organizing experience.

Children discover that accurate thinking, remembering, and creating depend on rich and well-organized experience.

Children Feel, Imagine, and Think

Children become interested and curious. They experience joy, enthusiasm, empathy, disappointment, or uncertainty.

They learn to recognize, name, and use emotions, and to regulate them when necessary.

Children form multimodal representations. They observe, act things out, arrange objects, move, build, draw, and imagine.

An inner representation supports understanding, remembering, design, planning, and the creation of something new.

Children search for relationships, compare, recognize patterns, ask questions, imagine possibilities, and develop solutions and explanations.

Thinking is therefore not merely the retrieval of ready-made answers. It is the creation of meaning, relationships, possibilities, and new order.

Children Give Form to Inner Content Through Symbolic Expression

Symbolic Expression does not mean spoken language alone.

Children make inner content tangible through speech, writing, drawing, images, signs, diagrams, gestures, movement, and other culturally created systems of expression.

They name what they perceive. They give form to emotions and thoughts. They communicate goals, record plans, ask questions, think together, and organize collaboration.

A multimodal representation gives shape to inner content. Through Symbolic Expression, that content becomes representable, communicable, and open to further development.

Children Remember, Choose, Design, and Plan

Children retrieve previous experiences, images, words, rules, and patterns of action, then use them in new situations.

“I have encountered something like this before.”
“I have used this strategy before.”
“I know what helped me then.”

From personal interests, possibilities, and ideas, children form goals.

They design and plan:

  • what they want to create and what the intended outcome should be;
  • how they can reach that outcome;
  • which tools, time, and forms of collaboration will be needed.

Design and planning do not create a rigid script. Children establish a possible path, begin to follow it, and revise it in response to experience.

Children Create, Act, and Reflect

Children write, read, calculate, draw, move, build, experiment, speak, and collaborate.

Through action, children experience their own agency.

An inner representation can become a drawing or an object. A thought can become a spoken sentence. A shared goal can become a completed project.

After the work, children reflect:

  • What did I want to achieve?
  • What did I create?
  • What helped me?
  • Which strategy worked well?
  • What can I use again?
  • What still needs further practice?

When children identify an error or mismatch, they may reread, rearrange, clarify, redesign, replan, or try another approach.

The primary source of development is the recognition, repeated use, strengthening, and further development of effective strategies. Adjustment becomes necessary when a mismatch or block appears.

In a Learning OS class, children regularly use and practice the whole Mind OS, then gradually become better able to recognize and consciously direct their own processes.

How Does It Transfer into Subject-Area Learning?

Learning OS becomes a genuine schoolwide system when the processes practiced in the dedicated class also appear in subject-area learning.

Each subject has its own content, rules, and operations. Across every subject, however, children rely on the same whole internal foundational system.

In a Collaborative Project

Children observe a phenomenon, formulate questions, retrieve previous experience, and choose a goal.

They design what they want to create and plan how to reach it. They assign roles, prepare tools, organize time, collaborate, revise their work, and finally present and evaluate the result.

Throughout the project, children use the whole Mind OS. They attend, connect emotionally, think, remember, use Symbolic Expression, choose, design, plan, organize, create, and act.

In a Mathematical Word Problem

A student reads a problem but does not begin working.

Perhaps the situation was not understood clearly. The essential information may not have been selected. The student may not have formed an inner representation, identified the goal, or recognized the first step.

“Pay closer attention” or “Read it again” names the desired result, but does not necessarily show the student how to move forward.

An elementary teacher can therefore ask more specific questions:

  • What did you understand?
  • Who or what is involved in the situation?
  • What changed?
  • What can you see in your mind?
  • What do you need to find?
  • Which strategy that you practiced earlier might help?

When students cannot form an inner representation of the situation, they can draw it, model it with objects, act it out, or represent it through movement.

Students can then give the situation form through Symbolic Expression:

This was the amount at the beginning. This amount was added. I need to find the total.

The teacher does not solve the problem for the student. The teacher helps retrieve and reuse a previously practiced mental strategy.

When I have read the text but still do not understand it, I can form an inner representation of the situation.

This is the essence of integration across subjects: children recognize and use a Mind OS strategy practiced in the Learning OS class within a new situation.

The Teacher as a Cognitive Architect

Learning OS does not reduce the teacher’s role. It makes that role richer and more precise.

We use the word cognitive in a broad sense. It refers to the whole activity of the child’s mind, including sensation, emotion, imagination, thinking, volition, action, and self-direction.

Teachers create varied and progressively structured situations in which children genuinely need to use the whole Mind OS.

Teachers create encounters and practice situations between children and the world.

Teachers enable children to use the same foundational capability:

  • through different kinds of content;
  • at different levels of difficulty;
  • in individual and collaborative work;
  • in the dedicated class and in subject-area learning;
  • first with teacher support and later with growing independence.

Teachers observe how the quality of use changes:

  • Does the child attend more accurately?
  • Does the child form richer inner representations?
  • Can previous experience be retrieved more easily?
  • Does the child choose goals more independently?
  • Are designs and plans becoming more useful?
  • Can the child carry a process through?
  • Can strategies transfer into new situations?
  • Is the need for external direction decreasing?

Through questions and feedback, teachers also help children recognize which strategies worked, what should be retained, and what can be used again.

When children become stuck, teachers provide precise questions or concrete supports. These may include a drawing, movement, physical model, spoken sequence of steps, reminder symbol, or previously practiced strategy.

The purpose is to help children continue independently again.

Teachers do not become psychologists or therapists. They remain teachers.

They create the conditions for use and practice, follow development, support transfer, and help children reorganize their processes when necessary.

Teachers gradually transform external guidance into internal self-direction.

A Shared Language for How Learning Works

Learning OS gives children and teachers a shared language for recognizing and directing mental processes.

This language does not replace practice. It helps children recognize, retain, and retrieve what has already been used.

The short classroom language of the Self-Direction Axis is:

Look → Understand → Evaluate → Adjust

Look

  • “This is the strategy I used.”
  • “This is how I pictured it.”
  • “This is how far I got.”
  • “I lost the thread.”

Understand

  • “This representation helped me.”
  • “It became clear when I said it out loud.”
  • “I have practiced this before.”
  • “I became stuck at the second step.”

Evaluate

  • “I was able to do this more independently.”
  • “I could retrieve this in a different situation.”
  • “I still need to practice this.”
  • “I need help with this now.”

Adjust

  • “I will continue using the same strategy.”
  • “I will break it into smaller parts.”
  • “I will draw it.”
  • “I will try a different sequence.”

These are not formulas to memorize. They are internal handles.

A shared language also supports collaboration among teachers.

Teachers can speak more precisely about what children can already use reliably, what still needs practice, the situations in which children can retrieve a strategy independently, and how external support can be reduced gradually.

What children use regularly can grow stronger. What children can also name and understand can be retrieved more consciously and applied in new situations.

How Is Learning OS Implemented in a School?

Learning OS is not a single professional-development day or a package of curriculum materials handed to teachers.

It becomes a schoolwide system when regular use is integrated into the school’s lasting practice.

Five conditions are essential.

A Protected Place in the Schedule

The weekly Learning OS class needs a regular and protected place. Development requires recurring, progressively structured practice.

Prepared and Supported Elementary Teachers

Elementary teachers learn the Mind OS map, the relationship between BOS and TES, and the process of use, practice, transfer, and growing independence.

Initial preparation is followed by ongoing professional support.

Integration Across Subjects

Children use the processes practiced in the dedicated class in mathematics, language arts, the arts, projects, and social situations.

Shared Professional Language and Collaboration

Teachers work with a shared conceptual map, exchange experiences, and plan opportunities for practice and transfer together.

Observation and Feedback

Schools follow more than subject-area results. They also observe:

  • what children can already use independently;
  • what children can apply in new situations;
  • how much external support is still needed;
  • how children design, plan, organize, and carry processes through;
  • how children collaborate;
  • and how children reorganize their processes when they become stuck.

Learning OS becomes sustainable when it is no longer the method of one teacher, but part of the school’s schedule, classroom practice, professional language, and collaboration.

What Can Children Use with Growing Independence?

The effects of Learning OS become visible as children use regularly practiced processes with increasing confidence, flexibility, and independence.

At first, teachers direct attention, model strategies, ask questions, provide reminders, and help organize the process.

Through practice, children gradually take over more of this work.

Children increasingly:

  • select what requires attention;
  • form inner representations;
  • retrieve previous experience;
  • establish goals;
  • design outcomes;
  • plan a course of action;
  • organize their work;
  • monitor progress;
  • carry action through;
  • and decide when help is needed.

Development often becomes visible through small changes.

At first, a child draws the mathematical situation after the teacher asks for a drawing. Later, the child begins drawing without being prompted.

At first, the teacher reminds the child of the sequence of steps. Later, the child creates a plan independently.

At first, the question comes from outside:

Which previous experience might help you?

Later, the child recognizes:

I have encountered something like this before. I know what I used then.

Real development is not the successful completion of one practiced task. It is the ability to use the same mental strategy with different content and in a different situation.

When internal processes become unsteady, children can turn to previously practiced tools.

They can return to the point where the text still made sense, create a drawing, divide the task into smaller parts, restate the goal, try another path, or ask for help.

The everyday effect of Learning OS becomes visible as children use the processes of the Mind OS with growing confidence, retrieve them in new situations, and gradually direct learning and action with increasing independence.

Learning OS in Everyday School Life

Learning OS does not work well because its name is mentioned in every lesson.

It works well when using and practicing the Mind OS becomes a natural part of everyday school life.

It works when children increasingly and more independently:

  • attend and observe accurately;
  • connect emotionally;
  • form inner representations;
  • ask questions and think;
  • retrieve previous experience;
  • choose goals;
  • design, plan, and organize;
  • collaborate;
  • carry a process through and bring it to completion;
  • use a previously practiced strategy in a new situation;
  • and direct their own work with less external guidance.

Regular use creates experience.

Varied practice strengthens capability.

Awareness supports easier retrieval and transfer.

Independent application develops internal self-direction and agency.

In the dedicated Learning OS class, children practice the processes of the Mind OS purposefully. In subject-area learning, they use those processes in real tasks. Within the everyday culture of the school, those processes become stronger and increasingly independent.
