Learning OS

Learning OS begins with the understanding that children arrive at school with their whole minds. Through a continuously active internal system, they experience, feel, think, remember, choose, design, plan, and act.

Learning OS makes this already functioning Mind OS easier to experience, understand, organize, reorganize, and use with growing awareness.

Children Arrive at School with Their Whole Minds

From the very first moment in the classroom, children are present with their whole minds.

They experience, feel, imagine, think, remember, form intentions, choose, and act. These processes work together within one coherent internal system that is continuously active.

Learning OS makes this already whole and functioning internal system, the Mind OS, easier for children to experience, understand, organize, reorganize, and use with growing awareness.

Through this, children can develop three deep certainties.

I Am Someone

I have my own experience, perspective, emotions, thoughts, volition, and capacity to make a difference.

There Is Order

There is a recognizable order within my inner processes, and I can reorganize them when that order is disrupted.

I Have Room to Act

I do not control everything. But I can choose, act, and make a real difference in what happens within me and around me.

BOS and TES

Student performance can be understood through two interconnected systems that build on one another and work together.

BOS, the Mind OS

BOS stands for Base Operating System. It is the continuously active foundational system of the mind.

The Mind OS does not operate only during task performance. It also works during rest, play, conversation, daydreaming, and apparent inactivity.

It brings together the mind’s general-purpose capabilities, which can be used again and again across many different situations.

TES, the Task Execution System

Task Execution Systems, or TES, are systems organized to carry out particular tasks.

Different Task Execution Systems operate when a student solves a math problem, understands a text, organizes a project, or handles a social conflict.

The BOS is the continuously active foundational system. A TES is a specific task execution system built on that foundation. Both operate at the same time whenever a task is carried out.

Through practice, a Task Execution System, or parts of it, can become automatic and gradually integrate into the BOS.

What once required focused attention can later become a reliable internal foundation for new and more complex tasks.

When the System Becomes Unsteady

A child sits in front of a task, but the thinking process does not begin.

The child looks at the text but cannot find a starting point. The steps are lost. The student rushes, withdraws, jokes around, resists, or gives up.

The child is physically present, but the internal system cannot carry the demands of the task at that moment.

We call this freezing.

Freezing is not a label. It is a signal that the cooperation between the Mind OS and the particular Task Execution System has become unsteady or overloaded.

The most important question is not always what the child does not know. Often, we need to understand what is missing for the child to access internal resources, begin the task, and guide the work through to completion.

The App Trap

When a computer’s operating system is unstable, installing more and more applications does not solve the problem.

Education often falls into a similar trap.

Schools assign more tasks, demand more practice, deliver more content, and introduce new digital platforms and assessments. These may all be useful. But they do not solve the underlying problem when children’s internal foundations cannot reliably carry those demands.

The demands of the task-performing world continue to grow, while the internal system that carries them receives little deliberate development as a complete system.

A digital environment filled with rapid shifts and powerful external stimuli increases this tension.

School, meanwhile, requires sustained attention, deep engagement, inner speech, patience, and self-direction.

Learning OS begins with the foundation. It gives children regular opportunities to use, practice, and develop their Mind OS so they can remain capable and engaged across a growing range of tasks.

The Internal Order of the Mind OS

The Mind OS can be understood through ten overlapping capabilities and, at the same time, ten perspectives on how the whole system works.

These perspectives do not divide the mind into separate parts. They make the same unified internal system visible and developable from different angles.

The Core Axis

Experience → Emotion → Thinking → Volition → Action

An encounter with the world gives rise to inner processing, the formation of direction and purpose, and finally visible action.

In greater detail, the cognitive side consists of:

Sensation → Perception → Emotion → Thinking

The action side consists of:

Volition → Design and Planning → Organizing → Execution

Design shapes the intended outcome: what is to be created and what it should become.

Planning shapes the path: how the intended outcome can be reached through a sequence of actions.

The Support Axis

Multimodal Representation ⇄ Symbolic Expression
Remembering ⇄ Learning

Multimodal Representation and Symbolic Expression carry and shape the contents of the mind.

Remembering preserves what has developed and makes it available again. Learning brings lasting change and continued development to the functioning system.

The Self-Direction Axis

Self-Observation → Self-Interpretation → Self-Evaluation → Self-Regulation → Self-Development

Children gradually become more able to observe, understand, evaluate, regulate, and develop their own mental processes.

Mind OS Management

The Mind OS is the functioning internal system itself. Mind OS Management is the conscious reading and direction of that system.

Children gradually become more capable of managing their own attention, time, energy, tools, steps, and collaboration.

The primary experience is positive: children discover that they can use their internal capabilities, and that practice helps them use those capabilities more skillfully.

Recognition, awareness, increasingly independent direction, and, when needed, reorganization and adjustment build on this experience.

Inner order is not always present.

The capacity to restore and reshape it, however, can be learned. This capacity is both an ability and a source of hope.

Children can learn to recognize what helps them, where their internal processes became unsteady, and how to return to action.

External guidance from the teacher gradually becomes internal self-direction.

Learning OS in School

Learning OS operates both as a dedicated foundational subject and as a system integrated throughout the life of the school.

A Dedicated Weekly Learning OS Class

Children use and develop the capabilities of the Mind OS within a protected environment created specifically for practice.

They attend, experience, connect emotionally, form inner representations, think, remember, choose goals, design, plan, organize, act, and reflect on their own processes.

Integration Across Subjects

The processes practiced in the dedicated class also appear in mathematics, reading, writing, the arts, project work, and everyday school situations.

Children begin to use the same strategies with different content and in new contexts.

The Teacher as a Cognitive Architect

Teachers create rich, varied, and progressively structured practice situations.

They observe the processes behind visible performance, make effective strategies recognizable, support transfer, and provide precise guidance when students become stuck.

What Does Learning OS Change?

For Children

Children experience the wholeness of their own minds, recognize internal order, and use their capabilities with growing confidence.

They retrieve processes practiced earlier and apply them in new situations. They design, plan, and act with increasing independence, and experience their own agency through real results.

For Teachers

Teachers gain a more precise map for reading the processes behind student performance.

They see not only the final answer, but also how a child attended, understood, remembered, designed, planned, and acted.

Teachers can reinforce effective strategies and offer more precise support when students become stuck.

For Schools

Learning OS creates a shared professional language, a consistent approach to development, and a foundational system that grows across four years of elementary school.

A Working System, Measurable Growth

Learning OS is not a plan for the future. It is an educational system that has been implemented across several complete grades 1–4 cycles.

An assessment summary followed the development of one class using Learning OS from the beginning of first grade through the end of fourth grade.

At the beginning of first grade, the class scored below the national average, the Budapest average, and the measured comparison class in all four areas of reading that were assessed.

By the end of fourth grade, the Learning OS class had surpassed every comparison value in all four areas.

The assessment results are supported by the system’s schoolwide integration and by feedback from elementary teachers, teachers in later grades, parents, and children.

Cognitive Sovereignty

The ultimate purpose of Learning OS is to help children direct their own learning and action with growing awareness and independence.

By Cognitive Sovereignty, we mean that children become less dependent on disruptions in their own attention, emotions, and thinking, and increasingly able to guide themselves back into a state of effective engagement.

Children do not control everything.

They do not understand every situation immediately.

Not every attempt succeeds.

But children can develop an inner compass even when there is no complete map yet.

They can attend, experience, create meaning, learn, choose, design, plan, act, reflect, and reorganize their own mental processes.

Learning OS does more than teach children how to learn. It teaches them how to use and direct their minds.
